Guys, I haven't been doing anything productive this past week; the only thing I can share are these studies I've been doing. I wanted to practice capturing likeness in a more realistic way—even though my style is generally more cartoonish, it never hurts to study a little realism.
And let me tell you, capturing a person’s likeness isn’t as easy as it looks—at least for me—but I tried my best. It’s not like I’m going for a hyperrealistic style anyway.
College has me really busy, and I’ve wanted to draw more these past few days, but I haven’t been able to because of all the stuff I have to do. I love design!!, but because of classes, sometimes I just feel like ignoring it completely lol.
I’ve started working on my project, called Small City; there’s still a lot of work to be done on it.
It took me about six hours in total to complete it, and it’s all vector-based.
The character you can see isn’t an original character, but rather a representation of myself: a little alien dressed in purple, my favourite colour. This character has been around since 2024, when I created it, and I’m clearly not a character designer – it’s not my profession – but I tried to keep it as simple as possible, building it around circles which I then modified gradually. Basically, it’s my ‘sona’.
You’ll notice I’ve got a thing for open or rural spaces, but that’s because it’s the landscape where I grew up – and what a coincidence that I’m also from a small city, lol.
A bit of the process – I did it all in Adobe Illustrator. I use the 2020 version, which is an older version, but it really does have everything I need and doesn’t have those AI tools.
First prototype of the logo
Second prototype.
To be honest, they’re all prototypes and I might change them at any time. I also thought about using various ones – because, why not? – we’ll see.
From South America With Love. It’s a piece where I incorporated elements of vector art typical of the mid-2000s to the early 2010s, along with an oil field—elements from my childhood that I grew up seeing often. I also drew inspiration from the song “Flyway” by Kero Kero Bonito—perhaps my favorite by the group—because, I don’t know, it makes me feel nostalgic. It’s funny that even though the album came out in the fall of 2018, I associate it more with summer, with the heat and temperatures reaching almost 40 degrees.
The song feels both uplifting and sad at the same time—maybe that’s why I used the two elements: the dynamic, fun 2000s-style graphics that remind me of beautiful things, and, on the other hand, something as depressing as an oil field.
A short motion graphics example. I should mention that I did most of it in Inkscape. It was my first time using Inkscape! It’s actually more intuitive than Illustrator, and it runs really smoothly and
quickly on my 4GB laptop (Linux), but in the end I ended up tweaking a few things in Illustrator and then imported it into After Effects.
Official header art for stargze, I decided to use only 4 colors this time, previously I used 6, but I think it was too much too handle for me. Not purple this time, for some reason I was only feeling green, orange, blue and pink, but I still love purple!
Inspired by some vector art and cartoons from my childhood, I can´t say with certain an especific example but it´s definetely inspired by this.
Prototype for stargze ver-4 official header. Looked cute but i didn´t feel it 100%
Header art prototype, also cute, but too much gray. I used the same building assets from the original header version. Actually I made this version first, but I really liked how the buildings looked so I used this asset in the current heade Header art prototype, also cute, but too much gray.
